License renewal policy trouble for Lions organ donation effort
History of MA Lions Lazarus Fund
The concept of the Lazarus Program was created by a resident of Maine, Ruth Farabee Clark.
Ruth Farabee Clark was diabetic, she was an ardent promotor of the organ donation program and worked to change the laws in the State of Maine regarding organ donation, especially regarding making the request for organ donations to the families of potential donors.
Ruth Farabee Clark presented her idea to the Massachusetts Lions Council of Governors in 1986, and an effort was made to start the program in Massachusetts. At that time the efforts failed, primarily due to the lack of contacts within the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Later, Ruth Farabee Clark took this program to the Maine Registry of Motor Vehicles and the Maine Lions and was able to succesfully launch the program in Maine.
